Description suction gripper

Vacuum grippers are suitable for a wide range of products, ranging from light fragile objects to heavier solid products. Our vacuum grippers are equipped with flexible suction cups or foam with which the gripper molds itself to the product. This creates a good connection to the product and a good grip can be guaranteed.

Our vacuum grippers are custom-made for your product or application. Use our configurator to determine the design and price for your gripper.

Vacuum grippers offer a lot of flexibility because there is only 1 contact surface, there is a lot of freedom in the product shape and the positioning of objects. By choosing the right type of suction cups or foam, we provide a reliable solution for your situation.

Options and Parameters

suction vs foam cobot vacuum gripper

Cups vs Foam

Suction cups are mainly used for lifting objects with smooth surfaces, such as glass or metal, by removing air from the suction cup and
to create a vacuum. They are stronger and suitable for lifting heavy objects.

Foam, on the other hand, is often used in conjunction with suction cups to protect delicate or fragile objects from scratches and damage. The foam acts as a soft cushion between the vacuum gripper and the object, distributing the pressure evenly. Foam is more flexible and adapts better to irregularly shaped objects.

Vacuum chambers

The number of vacuum chambers in a vacuum gripper plays an important role in its ability to grip different objects separately from each other. Any vacuum chamber
has its own control system, which allows the rooms to be controlled completely independently of each other. This offers advantages in situations where a single gripper is used to manipulate multiple objects. This ability to independently control the vacuum chambers provides flexibility and precision for tasks such as sorting items on a conveyor belt, moving different parts in a manufacturing process, or handling complex objects with multiple surfaces.

Flange offset and length

A flange connection connects the gripper to the robotic system. The desirable length of this flange depends on your situation. A longer bottle gives more space
between the arm of the system and the gripper, providing more room to move. A shorter flange makes for a more compact system.

The flange can also have an offset. This means that the center of the vacuum gripper is directly under the robot arm. This can be beneficial in situations where certain rotations are required where otherwise the product or gripper itself would conflict with the robot's arm.

FAQs

  • Air permeability of the material: this has a direct effect on the strength of the gripper. Porous materials allow air to pass through more easily, so that more flow/capacity is required to achieve the required suction power.
  • Surface roughness: Rough surfaces are difficult to grip with a vacuum gripper. A good connection is required between the gripping element and the surface. Foam grippers can provide the solution for somewhat rough surfaces.

A vacuum gripper is a device that uses vacuum suction to lift and move objects. Basically, the working principle is based on a suction cup placed on the surface of the object and a vacuum pump pumping out the air between the suction cup and the object, creating a strong bond.

Vacuum grippers offer several advantages over mechanical grippers. Here are some of the main benefits:

  • Versatility: Vacuum grippers can grip a wide variety of objects of different shapes and sizes. They easily adapt to different objects without the need for specific grippers for each object. This makes them very versatile in different applications.
  • Lightweight: Vacuum grippers are usually lighter in weight than mechanical grippers. This makes them suitable for applications where weight restrictions apply, such as robotics, mobile applications or automation systems with moving parts.
  • Delicate handling: Vacuum grippers are very suitable for handling delicate objects, such as glass, thin plates, electronic components or food products. They can hold these objects firmly without damaging them, thanks to the even distribution of pressure and the ability to adapt grip to different surfaces.
  • Fast grab and release loading times: Vacuum grippers can grab and release objects quickly and efficiently. The rapid vacuum and pressure control allows them to support high production rates and reduce cycle times.
  • Easy Adjustment and Installation: Vacuum grippers can be easily adjusted and installed on different machines and systems. They often require less complex mechanical adjustments than mechanical grippers, allowing for quick and cost-effective integration.
